There’s a new entry into the world of open world survival crafting games, and it’s abandoning the perils of nature for the unspoken evils of mystical realms. It’s called Nightingale.
The upcoming indie title received a new gameplay trailer at Summer Game Fest 2022, giving us a deeper glimpse into its fantastical Victorian world and survival gameplay. The 2-minute video showcases many mechanics that will be familiar from other multiplayer games, including picking bushes, felling trees, and mining ore.
You’ll need to do your best to stay dry, rested and fed as you fight the ferocious beasts that stalk the forest. In a bigger twist, you’ll be able to activate “portal arcs” that transport you to different, deadlier worlds. Multiverse gateways are unlocked using resources to create “realm cards” that allow you to influence the features, weather patterns, and challenges of procedurally generated shared worlds.
Portals will take you through faewild forests, swamps, deserts, jungles, as you progress through the uncharted lands of the wizarding world. Each realm you unlock will offer new opportunities for exploration, but will also open the door to monsters from the “inter-real void”. These beasts are quite gothic and remind us of the twisted monsters from the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. It’s all very metaphysical, and it all looks quite charming.
As you accumulate more resources, you will be able to expand properties and camps. Various tilesets will be available, NPCs can be recruited and some production areas can be automated. The entire game can be played alone or through online co-op.
There is no shortage of multiplayer survival games. While Valheim has made its name in 2021, the latest V Rising has tickled many people’s dancing. This vampire creation game reached a million players in just one week. Perhaps Nightingale can do the same.
